Doorways Home

David and I took part in a charity event last week- the Doorways Home Auction.

"This event takes 1950’s era doors and medicine cabinets from the Housing Authority demolition of Griff King, puts them into the hands of talented Texarkana area artists, and the results are auctioned off to raise funds for the Texarkana Homeless Coalition to support events and activities designed to minimize homelessness in our area."

This is the second year for Doorways Home. We had 25 doors and 7 medicine cabinets painted, mosaic-ed, feathered, and completely reworked in to beautiful pieces of "art".

David and I redesigned two doors. We went for more of a "functional" design rather than a piece of art. The "Command Center" was something we thought someone could use in their home or even in a classroom.
We attached a magnetic, dry erase calendar, a corkboard, mail slot, four buckets holding pens, sticky notes, push pins and chalk along with a fun chalkboard.

Our second door is a "Herb Garden". We truly enjoy our herb garden and when I found this idea on Pinterest, I knew it would make a great door!
We attached mason jars to the door with pipe clamps (found in the duct work area at Lowes) and then labeled each herb with a chalkboard tag. We  planted basil, parsley, oregano, spearmint, rosemary, sage, cilantro, peppermint, and stevia. This one was a hit and had everyone talking!

We had a great turn out for the auction. The President of our Chamber of Commerce was our auctioneer (and no, we don't all dress in the cowboy get-up here in Texas).

Overall it was a great event. We were able to raise over $6,000 to help the Texarkana Homeless Coalition.
